My Rotations Update

These past few months have been a whirlwind, I don't even know where to begin. This July I took and passed the first phase of my board exams (COMLEX-1) in my long journey to become a doctor. Then in August rotations started off with a kick with OB/GYN, followed by ENT (otolaryngology), then Family Medicine (which was amazing!), and now I'm excited to be on my OMM rotation.

I'm sure in any field it will be the same, but going from a very structured classroom environment to the actual practical aspect of that field is challenging and stressful. Then figuring out how to balance studying when you're drained each day from rotations is another curve to deal with. Irregardless, rotations are amazing, each day I feel closer to my goal and I can feel my fund of knowledge growing and assembling together. Its quite amazing and I absolutely love being a part of it!

A Few Tips for Successful Rotations
General Tips
- Find out where, who and when you are supposed to report to and where to park
- Be punctual: Punctuality shows respect to those around you, your field, your patients, and yourself.
- Ask questions: I'll admit, I've never been a good one to ask a particular question at the time of, but I generally have one the next day. I'm just slow at
- Dress the part: How you dress is how patients and those directly around you will perceive you.
- Read: Virtually every specialty and field has a book of questions and cases. Case Files and Blueprints are two good starting points. Ask your preceptor on the first day for reading suggestions also
- Bring snacks and water

Studying SpecificTips
- Read 30 mins - 2 hours a day. If you can't do this everyday, try to at least 4-5 days out of the week
- For each topic, make a short index card of the signs/symptoms/laboratory findings
- Case Files and Blueprints are two great review books with cases and questions to practice from
- Keep a journal (electronic or paper) of your experiences and any important notes to stay organized for reference. I like using OneNote to create different folders and tabs.

Lifestyle Tips
- Eat a balanced diet, its hard to get proper meals when you are in the hospital, but you need to stay hydrated and fed
- Exercise!!!
- Keep a hobby
- DRY SHAMPOO (AKA best friend)
